Kids Bouldering Update

June 15, 2010

For almost a year Urban Rocks has had a 12 or older rule on our boulder. Does this mean that we believe kid's can't or shouldn't boulder? Not at all. We simply had serious concerns over children's safety in our facility. The boulder is 15' tall and tops out. This means a long fall for little bones. There are also big guys going hard for the last move and potentially crushing a little one running underneath as they fall. These have been our concerns but we also realize this has excluded a lot of great kids from our gym. We have therefore reviewed our policy and made some changes that we believe will both protect children and allow them to boulder at Urban Rocks Gym.

New Bouldering Policy:

  • There is no age limit on bouldering but we recommend at least 6 yrs old to enjoy the harder type of climbing.
  • You must be 12 or older to top out. If you are under twelve you must down climb or drop at the 12' break on our wall.
  • All children under 12 must be actively spotted by an adult for each climb.
  • Children must be supervised by an adult at all times while in the bouldering area.
  • Absolutely no running on the gymnastic pads.
  • No standing underneath other climbers.
  • All adults supervising children will have to go through a saftey orientation their first time in.

The above rules will be enforced by Urban Rocks Staff for the safety of all concerned. Please let us know if you have any other comments or suggestions to make the gym a fun, safe and welcoming place for everyone!
